Some people think certain prisoners should be made to do unpaid community work instead of being put behind bars.

Many contemplate that certain offenders should be allowed to indulge in volunteer activities rather than sentencing to put them behind bars. In my opinion, I completely agree with this notion that the trivial convicted people should be forced into community work for numerous benefits which will be discussed in depth prior to reaching an informed conclusion.

To begin with, not all prisoners are born-criminals. In other words, some people get involved due to their situation, such as poverty and unemployment. In such cases, the repercussion of harsh imprisonment would be totally irrelevant, rather, such offenders could be rehabilitated and indulged to work for the society which will be beneficial for the community as well as for the one convicted as it will allow them to learn new skills and also procure acceptance of them to the public, which will also boost the opportunity of getting a paid job after the incarceration period.

For example, many minor offenders who committed pickpocketing and shoplifting were sentenced to volunteer in the COVID quarantine centers in Srilanka and were given a permanent position to work there, after their imprisonment.

On the other hand, with regards to the juvenile delinquent, it is profusely crucial to engage them in social services. To illustrate, a recent study has found when juvenile spends the majority of their time in jail, they tend to become bigger criminals and they re-offend. Perhaps, this is due to paying less heed to the society and this necessitates the introduction of unpaid communal activities to the youths, which will let them learn the importance of being with the society.

In conclusion, although the harsh sentence is necessary for criminals to put behind bars, in my perspective, I ponder that minor criminals should be persuaded to work with society to gain welfare benefits.
