Band 7 Sample Answer

Artists need a certain amount of freedom to develop their creativity. Some people think that artists should have total freedom to express any thoughts and ideas. To what extent do you agree?

Whether artists should be free to express their beliefs and ideas in a diverse society is a controversial issue. Nobody can deny that art is interpreted differently, depending on the personal views of individuals. However, total freedom can harm societies in different ways and thus, I believe that artists should be given just enough freedom to create their ideas.

To begin with, art is an important unit in modern societies. In particular, art allows people to express themselves and create, in various art forms, whatever they feel or think. People should have the chance to interpret their emotions and create unique pieces of art that have a positive impact on everyone’s life. A recent example is related to the murder of a black person by an American policeman. On occasions like this, art tends to act like an expression of motivation and a stimulator to change people’s perspectives. As a result of the aforementioned example, many people had the total freedom to create motivational paintings or even online posts that are opposing racist ideologies and promoting equality in a social level.

Undoubtedly, art is a personal point of view and it should be judged by the individual and not collectively. However, what someone may find exquisite, others may find it disgusting and distasteful. For instance, there are many graffiti artworks in the downtown of Athens, that promote anarchy and dictatorship. These kinds of art can separate society into different political groups and start a new era of social war that will have negative effects on societies.

To conclude, although art can be synonymous with freedom, governments need to set limits on artists. I am convinced that total freedom can be detrimental for societies, and for this reason, people should be almost free to develop their creativity.
