In this present millennium, before the commencement of third-level education, many students are advised to work or travel for a year. This essay will suggest that earning money is the primary advantage while the loss of momentum in studies is the biggest disadvantage it.

On the one hand, tertiary education is undeniably very expensive. Taking one year gap would provide an opportunity to earn and save money for the college fee, accommodation, and to manage all other living expenses. This would reduce the financial burden off the shoulder and hence, students can study peacefully without taking part in any part-time jobs. For example, according to recent statistics, the average tuition fee for an international student in Canada is $ 30 000 annually. Many students find it tough to cope up with the financial situation and tend to discontinue the university midway. Hence, taking a time off for a job experience after high school is beneficial for the youngsters.

On the other hand, despite the benefits, many students who take a gap-off rarely return to the educational path. As they are interested in traveling and earning, young people are highly demotivated to start their education. As a result, they remain in a job below their capabilities. For instance, ‘The times’ recently found that the majority of the youngsters who took a gap-year never entered university. It is clear that a twelve-month gap could make an immense difference to a child’s life.

In conclusion, taking a break from studies can be beneficial for students who would save-up funds to commence their tertiary–level education as soon as one year ends, however, they should be extremely careful that this should not distort their education.
